Lauren Velez was raised in Queens, NY among her 8 siblings and has a twin sister Lorraine (who is also an actress). Lauren always dreamed of acting. She played a groundhog in a school play during her school years. Lauren actually started her career as a dancer when she received a scholarship from the Alvin Ailey Dance School and she first performed in the National Touring Company of the Musical ‘DreamGirls’. On Broadway’s ‘Into The Woods’, she once worked as an understudy for Phylicia Rashad. Lauren is very best known for her role as Nina Moreno on the show ‘New York Undercover’. She made hr film debut in 1994 when she got a leading role in the independent film ‘I Like it Like That’. On ‘OZ’, she played Dr. Gloria Nathan and also appeared in several other TV shows including ‘Law & Order’. Currently, she is playing Lt. Maria Laguerta on ‘Dexter TV show’. She was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award and The Desi Award for Best Lead Actress.
